HALBE at EXPONATEC COLOGNE 2011
How do you protect and preserve valuable art objects? This question was the topic of discussion among more than 274 exhibitors from 17 countries and 4,000 visitors at this year’s EXPONATEC trade fair in Cologne. At the HALBE exhibition booth, the participants of this international specialist trade fair for museums, conservation and cultural heritage were able to take a close look at the solutions provided by HALBE with its newly launched product offerings.

Art breathes easy
Paintings such as da Vinci’s Mona Lisa inspire millions of visitors in the Louvre every year. Had this unique painting been exposed to its environment unprotected, then the passing of time would undoubtedly have left its mark on the Florentine lady with the enigmatic smile. Environmental pollutants, chemicals, light and humidity are not just a nuisance to works of art - they also confront restorers and museums with the same question day by day: How does one protect valuable objets d’art and preserve them for future generations?
Perfect conditions
HALBE Rahmen GmbH, a leading manufacturer of high-quality picture frames, is also kept busy by this challenge. Just in time for this year’s EXPONATEC in Cologne, the company presents a new product that will bring lasting delight to the art world. The frame maker offers up the Conservo magnetic frame, a model that produces perfect conditions for sensitive works of art thanks to its 100% chemical-free and recyclable inner workings. This is made possible by utilising special cardboard, known as certified Klug corrugated cardboard, which is used instead of the more conventional hard foam. It keeps paintings free of contaminants and critical environmental influences – so that even Mona Lisa would be able to breathe freely.
HALBE also insists on particularly user-friendly components as features of this product: height-adjustable wall spacers to fine-tune the distance from the wall and diagonal spacer holes for horizontal alignment if suspension points are not level leave plenty of room for manoeuvre when major or minor unforeseeables arise. And a work of art held by the Conservo magnetic frame is certainly able to keep its distance. An individually adjustable inlay depth and an optional inlay frame allow pictures to be displayed to best effect. On request, the Conservo magnetic frame can be fitted with a new picture lock, which is incorporated into the rear of the frame out of sight.
A frame brings protection
Since HALBE also knows that this alone does not provide all-round protection for moisture-sensitive exhibits, it has produced a suitable solution for another specific everyday requirement on the part of restorers: the Protect magnetic frame, which certainly lives up to its name. Its HALBE-designed technology ensures a constant level of humidity inside the frame, making it completely independent of the external environment. The Protect magnetic frame comes with three “buffer” components as standard: these include PRO-SORB silica gel, a pH-neutral background cardboard, and an aluminium sheet that acts as a diffusion barrier on the rear and includes a peripheral seal. Readings can be taken from a thermohygrometer on the back of the frame.
The latest advance for the Protect magnetic frame is a short-range wireless data logging system from Terra Transfer, which is designed to precisely determine and analyse climate progression in its entirety inside the frame. “The latest data logging technology is now able to deliver what we have dreamt of for so long: the continuous monitoring of data on conditions within the frame. It is even possible to retrieve the data live via an internet logger anywhere on the world wide web,” explains managing director Heinrich Halbe. This allows levels of relative humidity inside the frame to be precisely monitored and constantly maintained, which optimises storage, transport and exhibitions many times over. A really creative prospect for the art world, which lets restorers, museums and lovers of irreplaceable snapshots relax as they look to the future.
