Big is beautiful - Putting large format images in the spotlight

Creating an inspiring atmosphere with perfectly framed pictures

Kirchen, Aug. 25, 2020 - Motifs with many small, picture-important details need size just as much as striking individual works. Renowned artists, such as Peter Lindbergh or Vincent an Gogh, knew about the fascination of large-format pictures. The proportions of a room as well as the interior and the colour scheme play an essential role so that a photograph or a painting can unfold its full radiance. Works of art in XXL format place special demands on frames and hanging, as they can quickly weigh 70 kg and more. HALBE - Frames knows exactly what needs to be taken into account when framing art objects so that the value of the picture is fully appreciated.

Effective presentation of large-format pictures

The visual language is full of emotion and passion. Every artist tries to capture a special moment in his picture - in XXL format these moments come alive. Renowned photographers and painters as well as architects have a great awareness of quality and know about the presentation aesthetics of pictures in XXL format - whether as "soloist" or multi-part motif. Thus, among others, the artist couple Daniel and Geo Fuchs decided to present their pictures for the exhibition "Nature & Destruction" in the Galerie von Braunbehrens in overwhelming large-format pictures.

To give a room the desired "aha" effect with a large-format picture requires know-how and intuition. Picture message, picture size, processing, hanging, light and ambience must fit together, so that the motive pulls the viewer in its spell and remains in the memory.

Hanging pictures in XXL format with style

No picture should compete with the furnishings. Especially large-format pictures want to be skillfully put in the spotlight, because they can completely change the atmosphere of a room. They need a large wall or a large room, such as a foyer, so that they can unfold their full expressive power. Large format pictures look excellent on completely free walls without furniture or other decorative elements.

For a narrow wall space, a picture in portrait format is recommended, as it emphasizes the height of the room. Above a large sofa or sideboard, the picture should be 2/3 of the width of the piece of furniture. The viewing distance should also not be underestimated - a picture should always be graspable in its entirety. A colorfully painted wall acts like a passepartout, which brings a picture even better to advantage. Large pictures with very impressive motifs look ideal on a light grey or sand-coloured wall. In general, it is important to ensure that the colours of the picture and the wall complement each other and still form a certain contrast.

Picture frame fulfils a variety of functions

Many people think of the frame as a decorative element, but this does not do justice to its various functions. The frame is an essential part of artistic expression and affects the value of an object. For Vincent van Gogh, for example, a picture frame was an indispensable gesture of appreciation and respect for the artist.

Plain frames emphasize the formal aspects of the artwork - the colours, the brushstroke or even the illumination of a photograph. The colour of the frame molding should also not be underestimated. A dark frame enhances the luminosity of the colours and isolates a painting from its surroundings to a greater degree than a light frame. For the framing of XXL pictures, HALBE offers magnetic frames with wooden strips up to the format 140 x 250 cm and aluminium strips up to 200 x 300 cm. You can choose between different angular and rounded profile sizes as well as 18 different colours.

Framing XXL pictures with passepartout: The absolute eye-catcher

In addition, framing with passepartout also enhances large-format pictures and provides the desired "aha" effect for the viewer. "Care should be taken to use only a certified museum-quality mount board that is acid-free and resistant to aging," emphasizes David Halbe, managing director of HALBE-Rahmen GmbH. As far as the choice of passe-partout colour is concerned, anything is conceivable and depends not least on personal preferences. With black and white photographs a white passepartout looks very good. A black passepartout unfolds its full effect with dark picture motifs, as the motif then appears lighter overall. In combination with a dark frame, the black passepartout looks elegant and stylish.

Framing XXL formats behind glass

Large-format pictures often exert a special fascination on the viewer - you would like to touch them or look at the details up close. Therefore, when choosing the framing, the protective function against touch, dirt, damage and also harmful UV radiation is of great importance. From a format of 120 x 140 cm, the art objects should no longer be framed with mineral glass but with acrylic glass, also known under the brand name PLEXIGLAS, as it is considerably safer to handle.

For exhibits that are particularly worthy of protection, HALBE-Rahmen Optium Museum recommends using acrylic glass, which guarantees optimal perception of the art objects. This is because it is an anti-reflective acrylic glass that is also shatterproof and scratch-resistant, as well as protecting against UV radiation.

Special requirements for frames and hanging

The larger a picture, the more important it is to pay attention to the load-bearing capacity of the hanging systems and walls. On average, a framed picture in the 70 x 100 cm format weighs between 6 - 9 kg. This is quite different for a 200 x 300 cm picture with a 6 mm Optium acrylic glass, which reaches about 70 kg. Also a picture laminated on a 200 x 300 cm and 8 mm thick acrylic glass plate weighs approx. 60 kg. Consequently, pictures in XXL format must have a stable framing and suspension. In addition, the load-bearing capacity of the wall must be taken into account and correspondingly stable hanging points must be created.

For picture rails, ropes, hooks and screws, the load-bearing capacity must be taken into account. "From a format of 120 x 140 cm, we recommend using specially developed heavy-duty hooks with several screws per angle for the suspension. In addition, to prevent the picture from falling down, a picture lock should be mounted on the lower edge of the object," says David Halbe.
