Perfect Staging of Images

Each installation is a challenge for art lovers and professionals

Kirchen, Jan. 10, 2022 - We can hardly imagine walls without pictures - they add a special flair to any room. Choosing a piece of art is just as exciting as the task of finding the right place for it. Each hanging is a design act that depends on specific spatial conditions. While museums are usually unfurnished and no sunlight interferes with the presentation of pictures, the situation is different in the living room at home or in business premises. In addition to rooms flooded with light, wallpaper, furniture and furnishings have a considerable influence on the staging of pictures. For a successful arrangement as a "soloist" or in the form of a row or grid hanging, certain rules should be followed. HALBE-Rahmen (www.HALBE-rahmen.de) knows exactly what characterises the perfect wall design.

Picture presentation requires a feeling for art and space

Regardless of whether a picture is stylishly displayed in a living room, prominently in the foyer of a corporate headquarters, or as part of an exhibition in a museum - there must generally be a relationship between the work of art and its surroundings. The proportions of a room, the incidence of light as well as the interior play an essential role. Large-format paintings require a larger environment than smaller exhibits. The front wall of a staircase, for example, is ideal for portrait-format pictures in XXL format, whereas a uniformly framed series of pictures in landscape format can be perfectly arranged in the staircase.

In general, no picture should compete with voluminous furniture or "wild" wallpaper designs. The targeted use of colourful accents often makes them stand out more. A wall painted in one colour looks like a passepartout. Whether it's gray, Bordeaux red or blue, make sure the colours of the picture and wall complement each other while still providing some contrast.

Define the right height

When placing artworks in a room or on a wall, visual aspects must be taken into account. As we all know, the human field of vision is not uniform, i.e. the viewing angle in the upper area is smaller than in the lower area. People are therefore more likely to notice radiators, sockets or the condition of floors than hanging systems or ceiling installations.

This naturally has consequences for the height orientation of artworks. With block hanging, the pictures in the lower area are better perceived compared to the pictures hanging above. The further the viewing distance, the higher a picture is perceived on the wall. The viewing distance plays a key role, especially when hanging exhibitions - in important museums, such as the Pergamon Museum or the Green Vault, you often cannot get closer than two metres to the pictures.

In private rooms or confined spaces, a picture should always be aligned at the viewer's eye level, i.e. the centre of the picture will be at 1.55 m for people of average height. Hanging a picture too high gives the viewer the impression that the picture is floating in the air.

Determine the perfect spacing

Large wall surfaces often pose challenges for art connoisseurs. The human eye likes symmetry and balance. It is often best to distribute a series or collection of pictures harmoniously on a wall. For example, if a particularly large exhibit hangs on the left side of the wall, a similarly large picture is needed on the right side.

Visual weighting plays a certain role in defining the hanging distance between pictures. The distance between a large- and small-format picture appears narrower than between pictures of the same size. Generally speaking, the spacing must be determined individually, as it expresses the coherence or difference in content. If two or more works of art belong together, the distance should be a maximum of 5 to 10 cm.

Deciding on a suspension method

There are no binding rules as to how pictures should be suspended. Within an exhibition or in a room, the staging of the different artworks should consistently follow a uniform scheme. A constant change of hanging methods, such as alignment on the central axis, top or bottom edge, block hanging or geometric arrangement, does not produce a harmonious overall impression.

Classic hanging or gallery rails

Usually small and light works of art are held in place with a nail in the form of a single-point suspension. The advantage is that the picture frame always hangs straight or can be easily balanced. For larger or heavier picture frames, a two-point suspension is recommended. The difficulty is to position the screws or nails at exactly the same height. Exhibits in XXL format require heavy-duty hooks.

In public buildings, galleries, schools and surgeries, the walls often must not be damaged for a special exhibition. Gallery rails are the optimal solution for this case. They offer the advantage of rearranging or exchanging the pictures at any time in public facilities as well as in private rooms - without leaving holes in the wall, because the pictures are suspended on perlon or steel cables as desired.
