The perfect exhibition

From the concept to the realization of an art exhibition there are many aspects to consider

Kirchen, Nov. 10, 2020 - To realize an exhibition is very complex - especially in times of Corona. At the beginning of every exhibition project there is detailed planning - theme, exhibition location, target group, timing, financing, etc.. No matter if it is about impressive photographs, fancy lithographs or extravagant paintings - every exhibition should ideally arouse curiosity and interest among art lovers. The pictures exhibited must meet the highest quality standards and be in harmony with the architecture and proportions of the exhibition space. A clear overall impression is the be-all and end-all, which can contain contradictory but not incongruous elements. Renowned artists, museums and gallery owners appreciate the know-how of HALBE-frames to achieve the desired effect of the exhibits and to protect them from soiling, mechanical damage as well as climate and light damage.

Pre-selection of exhibition exhibits

Every artist dreams of presenting his paintings to a wide audience within the framework of a public exhibition. Whether it is a solo or group exhibition - in general, the conception and design of an exhibition must take into account aspects of content, aesthetics and representation. Plans for the realization of an exhibition presuppose the first rough pre-selection of the picture motives and/or works of art, before the exhibition place is looked for. Only the best is good enough - the selected exhibits must reflect the craftsmanship of an artist, deal with a theme and be of excellent quality.

Determining the exhibition venue

The art market is booming - art lovers have high expectations of an exhibition project. Therefore, great attention should be paid to the selection of the exhibition venue. Depending on whether one wants to obtain the opinion of third parties on the works, become known as an artist or even sell the exhibits, public spaces such as galleries, museums, public authorities, banks, doctors' surgeries but also hotels and schools are suitable. In addition to the time availability of the exhibition location, it is important to check whether there is sufficient exhibition space as well as good lighting conditions. Infrastructure and accessibility should not be underestimated for the success of the exhibition. Even if the exhibition is far in the future, to be on the safe side, it should be checked whether hygiene requirements, such as sufficient spacing, can be met.

Lighting enhances the impact of pictures

Lighting is better suited than any other instrument of exhibition technology to creating an atmosphere specific to the object. Incorrect or unpleasant lighting can impair the aesthetic enjoyment of an exhibition. The most frequently observed error in the illumination of pictures is the incorrect use of indirect and direct lighting, i.e. scattered and accent lighting. Exhibitions require pleasant light that illuminates the room as evenly as possible without causing glare, casting shadows or distorting colours. Overhead lighting is ideal in order to eliminate disturbing reflections on the pictures framed under glass or exhibits laminated on acyl glass.

Drawing up a hanging plan

Once the exhibition location has been determined, the phase of detailed exhibition conception begins. An art exhibition can be purely aesthetic, didactic, representative or commercially oriented. It is important to define a short concise title for the exhibition. With regard to the presentation of the selected pictures, a hanging plan must be worked out, taking into account the lighting conditions and proportions of the exhibition rooms. Since certain walls or positioning are more prominent than others, the sequencing of the paintings is always an act of judgmental control. Large works of art require space and should be staged alone on a colored wall, for example. Tall rooms also require tall paintings. In a row or grid hanging, which appears clear and modern, the pictures should not only have the identical format, but also reflect a theme and correspond to a colour scheme.

Presentation type is decisive for the image effect

Today, many different fine art papers can be printed with different gradations from hard to soft and surfaces from matt to high-gloss. In addition, fabrics, foils, canvases and much more can also be used as substrates. This opens up a wealth of presentation possibilities. "Nowadays, the picture merges with the carrier material and the matching frame to form a complete work of art," emphasizes David Halbe, Managing Director of HALBE-Rahmen GmbH.

A high-quality and coherently selected frame has a decisive influence on the perception and value of the art object by the viewer. Plain frames underline for example the formal aspects of the work of art - the colours, the Brushduktus in addition, the illumination of a photograph. The modern aluminium and wooden magnetic frames from HALBE are particularly suitable for exhibitions, as they not only draw the viewer's eye to the picture, but can also be used for years to come. Thanks to the magnetic frame principle, all works of art can be perfectly framed and replaced from above in record time.

Protection of exhibits has top priority

When handling originals, not only the greatest care is required, but also absolute cleanliness and a dust-free environment. White cotton or special latex gloves should be worn when framing or laminating. Regardless of the type of presentation chosen, it is essential to protect the surface of the picture. Even during transport, hanging and finally exhibition, scratches and other damage can often destroy a picture. It is not without reason that many galleries present valuable art objects framed behind glass. In addition, there should always be a small gap between the picture and the wall so that air circulation is guaranteed at all times. HALBE therefore always supplies all individually manufactured magnetic frames with felt wall spacers.

Hanging pictures is an aesthetic design act

There are many different hanging methods, such as row, grid, edge or Petersburg hanging, to perfectly set off pictures in an exhibition. Generally, a hanging concept should be developed before an exhibition. "Before hanging, we recommend a positional rehearsal to check all aesthetic aspects in harmony with the architecture and proportions of the exhibition space, i.e. first lean the frames against the intended wall position," David Halbe. Whether large or small, rectangular or square - the right height for a picture is quickly defined. The centre or top third of a picture should always be at the viewer's eye level, i.e. at a height of 1.55m.
