The pictures exhibited must meet the highest quality standards and be in harmony with the architecture and proportions of the exhibition space. Depending on whether one wants to obtain the opinion of third parties on the works, become known as an artist or even sell the exhibits, public spaces such as galleries, museums, public authorities, banks, doctors' surgeries but also hotels and schools are suitable. In addition to the time availability of the exhibition location, it is important to check whether there is sufficient exhibition space as well as good lighting conditions. Infrastructure and accessibility should not be underestimated for the success of the exhibition. Even if the exhibition is far in the future, to be on the safe side, it should be checked whether hygiene requirements, such as sufficient spacing, can be met.
Lighting enhances the impact of pictures
Lighting is better suited than any other instrument of exhibition technology to creating an atmosphere specific to the object. Incorrect or unpleasant lighting can impair the aesthetic enjoyment of an exhibition. The most frequently observed error in the illumination of pictures is the incorrect use of indirect and direct lighting, i.e. scattered and accent lighting. Exhibitions require pleasant light that illuminates the room as evenly as possible without causing glare, casting shadows or distorting colours. Overhead lighting is ideal in order to eliminate disturbing reflections on the pictures framed under glass or exhibits laminated on acyl glass.
Drawing up a hanging plan
Once the exhibition location has been determined, the phase of detailed exhibition conception begins. An art exhibition can be purely aesthetic, didactic, representative or commercially oriented. It is important to define a short concise title for the exhibition. With regard to the presentation of the selected pictures, a hanging plan must be worked out, taking into account the lighting conditions and proportions of the exhibition rooms. Since certain walls or positioning are more prominent than others, the sequencing of the paintings is always an act of judgmental control. Large works of art require space and should be staged alone on a colored wall, for example. Tall rooms also require tall paintings.
