Variety meets elegance

Setting the scene for light artworks with filigree magnetic frames from HALBE

Kirchen, March 16, 2022 -  A brilliant idea, six frame types, 14 different profiles and colours as well as 15 selectable glass types allow for more than 293,000 combinations of standard formats in the HALBE frame manufactory (www.halbe-rahmen.de). But not every one of these frames is suitable for a harmonious integration of a bright artwork into a room and for giving it the necessary radiance. HALBE Rahmen knows that, in addition to good taste and know-how, you also need a great deal of intuition. Minimalist graphics in particular require thin frames that emphasise the lightness and clarity of the artwork. Through perfect staging on coloured walls and, if necessary, with appropriate lighting, relatively unflashy pictures can become true "highlights".

Not all frames are the same

There is a wide range of frames, differing in profile, colour and quality. First and foremost, the frame serves to visually enhance a picture and underline its artistic quality. In addition, the frame should direct the viewer's gaze to the picture's message.

Light-coloured works of art often have a hard time attracting the necessary attention of the viewer because of their colouring. Thin, unobtrusive wooden and aluminium frames optimally emphasise the lightness of a picture. Frames that are too opulent clash with the light image and create an imbalance.

Particularly minimalist drawings, cartoons and caricatures are perfectly put in perspective in a slim light maple or ash frame. Bright monochrome charcoal and pencil drawings are ideal in a plain silver or gold frame. Precious metal tones complement the neutral colour scheme and catch the light, emphasising the centre of the drawing. Classic à la Coco Chanel, an almost white picture looks great in a very fine black frame.

Passepartouts - For a powerful and expressive framing

By using a passepartout, you set an additional "stage" for a lighter picture. On the one hand, a passepartout increases the distance to the wall colour and draws the viewer's eye to the centre of the picture. On the other hand, you achieve a depth effect that enhances the expressiveness of the motif.

High-quality works on paper should not come into contact with the frame glass, as this can cause paint to come off, prevent the picture from breathing and moisture from escaping - this leads to ripples and wrinkles in the long term or promotes the formation of mould. When choosing a passepartout, make sure that it is a PAT-tested passepartout in museum quality that is acid-free and resistant to aging. The passepartout colour should be a shade darker than the paper of the artwork.

DISTANCE magnetic frames turn bright pictures into "stars"

High-quality works on paper are increasingly being produced on special FineArt and artists' papers with special surface structures or with scooped edges. Exceptional works on paper require an exceptional presentation - the DISTANCE magnetic frame allows a completely free-floating mounting, i.e. the picture floats between the back wall and the glass of the frame. This emphasises the special lightness of the artwork. The magnetic spacer bars of the frame not only act as spacers between the background board and the glass pane, but also create a special effect of depth.

Light paper works look extremely elegant in a DISTANCE magnetic frame if, for example, they are framed with a thin white maple profile and equipped with white background cardboard and white spacer bars. In a silver DISTANCE magnetic frame - with background cardboard in grey and spacer bars in silver - the picture is really highlighted as a "star" by the flowing colour transition. A minimalist sketch with black lines looks fantastic in a black wooden or aluminium frame with black spacer bars and white background cardboard. "It is precisely the colour contrast between background cardboard and spacer bars that creates dynamism and enhances the depth effect of the artwork in the frame - in our view, an exciting design option for art lovers," says David Halbe, Managing Director of HALBE-Rahmen GmbH.

Coloured walls pep up bright pictures

In principle, you can't go wrong with white walls. Rooms furnished in all-white look particularly elegant with works of art in pastel shades. Light-coloured pictures exude a touch of luxury when they are set in a silver, gold or chrome-coloured frame. However, bright works of art look even more impressive on coloured walls.

Warm shades of grey are part of the most sophisticated interior design concepts and give every picture a stylish appearance. Strong shades such as Bordeaux red, moss green or dark blue are also very suitable. The colourfully painted wall takes on the role of a passe-partout. "A very special 'aha' effect is created when a single picture or two pictures that belong together are staged and illuminated one below the other on a coloured stripe," as David Halbe points out.

A brilliant idea - many possibilities: Pictures can be framed and displayed in various ways. The interplay of motif, frame, passepartout, wall and mounting is decisive for the perfect staging.
