Unlike coloured cardboard our cardboard in three different shades of white, grey or black always shifts the picture in the viewer's focus. The white cardboard is a clean, bright white with optical brightener - which is ideal for e. g. offset paper. Antique white is the most neutral of the three white shades and presents the perfect medium tone - for instance for Fine Art paper and almost all applications where the shade of white in the picture renders is nuances brighter or darker. Natural white is the preferred choice for a warm, slightly more yellow tone - this shade is mainly used for older works of paper. Grey and black cardboards are a creative alternative to the three shades of white. All five shades can be ordered in a material strength of either 0.75 mm, 1.5 mm or 3 mm, each up to 1200 x 1400 mm.
BRINGS THE PICTURE TO THE FOREGROUND
Background cardboard
A background cardboard consists of the same material as a passe-partout – only without cut-out. It's the background for the picture or object that needs framing. It can be used to install or fixate pictures or as design element. HALBE only uses certified KLUG museum cardboard as background, which meets even highest conservation requirements.
Deployment
The background cardboard serves as the base of the picture and is always used when the picture is not supposed to be placed directly on the standard back panel in the base element of a magnetic frame – whether it's for optical reasons or for practical aspects if you plan a photo montage inside the frame. Depending on the frame the background cardboard is included in the delivery. For the Classic magnetic frame, the background cardboard needs to be ordered extra if needed. Besides using the background cardboard as an accessory inside the frame, it is also ideal for archiving or printing pictures, to paint on or craft with – in museum quality.
Look
The background carton creates an all-round border for art that is not completely filling the frame. You can select a colour to match. Its paperlike structure also harmonizes more than the smooth, white back panel of the Classic magnetic frame.
COLOUR AND THICKNESS
APPLICATION EXAMPLES
Small pictures in big frames.
The picture was professionally fixated on the background cardboard. The colour of the surrounding border as well as the structured surface of the background cardboard intensify the effect and emphasizes the smaller picture in the frame.
Freely composed montages.
With the HALBE Distance magnetic frame the picture can be placed on the delivered background cardboard with a gap from the glass. The selectable colour and the fine structure of the background cardboard can create an additional depth effect.
Freely composed pictures with passe-partout.
This type of picture montaging is particularly used when framing with an angled cut passe-partout where the edge of the picture is supposed to remain visible all-round. The background cardboard should then have the same colour as the passe-partout in order to create a harmonious transition.

Conservation
The background cardboard is ideal for conservational framing. Its contact with delicate art, modern photo paper and inkjet paper is completely harmless – for it is acid-free, light and ageing-resistant. In addition it is buffered with at least 3 to 4% calcium carbonate to protect against air pollutants. This makes the frame even safer and also meets the technical requirements of norms for ageing-resistant paper pursuant to DIN 6738 (LDK 24-85) and ISO 9706. Due to the calcium carbonate it shouldn't be used for very old photos.
Multiple design possibilities.
With the background cardboard art can be presented in various ways. The application examples give a good visual impression of how different a picture can look compared to a borderless presentation without any distance between picture and frame profile.
W White
AW Antique white
NW Natural white
G Grey
S Black
Note! If the colour of the background cardboard and the picture don't exactly match, the cardboard is nearly always selected one shade darker rather than too light: Like this, particularly with white shades, the frame doesn't make the picture look yellowed.
