Unlike coloured cardboard our cardboard in three different shades of white, grey or black always shifts the picture in the viewer's focus. The white cardboard is a clean, bright white with optical brightener - which is ideal for e. g. offset paper. Antique white is the most neutral of the three white shades and presents the perfect medium tone - for instance for Fine Art paper and almost all applications where the shade of white in the picture renders is nuances brighter or darker. Natural white is the preferred choice for a warm, slightly more yellow tone - this shade is mainly used for older works of paper. Grey and black cardboards are a creative alternative to the three shades of white. All five shades can be ordered in a material strength of either 0.75 mm, 1.5 mm or 3 mm, each up to 1200 x 1400 mm.
BRINGS THE PICTURE INTO THE FOREGROUND
The background board
A background board is made from the same material as a passepartout - only without a cut-out. It is the background for the picture or object that is being framed. It can be used for mounting or fixing pictures or as a design element. HALBE only uses certified KLUG museum board for its background boards, which meets the highest conservation requirements.
Use
The background cardboard is the base for the picture, so to speak. It is always used when the picture is not to be placed directly on the standard back panel in the basic element of a magnetic frame - either for visual reasons or for practical reasons relating to mounting the picture in the frame. Depending on the frame variant, the background cardboard is included as part of the frame. At Classic magnetic frame, the background cardboard is ordered as an option. In addition to being used as an accessory in the picture frame, the background cardboard is ideal for archiving pictures, printing and even as museum-quality craft and painting cardboard.
Appearance
The background board forms a surrounding edge for a work of art that is not completely flat in the frame. Its colour can be selected to match this. Its paper-like structure also harmonizes better than the smooth white back panel of the Classic magnetic frame.

APPLICATION EXAMPLES
Small pictures in big frames.
The picture was professionally fixated on the background cardboard. The colour of the surrounding border as well as the structured surface of the background cardboard intensify the effect and emphasizes the smaller picture in the frame.
Freely composed montages.
With the HALBE Distance magnetic frame the picture can be placed on the delivered background cardboard with a gap from the glass. The selectable colour and the fine structure of the background cardboard can create an additional depth effect.
Freely composed pictures with passe-partout.
This type of picture montaging is particularly used when framing with an angled cut passe-partout where the edge of the picture is supposed to remain visible all-round. The background cardboard should then have the same colour as the passe-partout in order to create a harmonious transition.

Conservation
The background board is suitable for conservation framing. Its contact with sensitive works of art, modern photographic papers and inkjet papers is harmless - because it is acid-free, lightfast and resistant to ageing. In addition, it is buffered with at least 3 to 4% calcium carbonate against airborne pollutants, which also securely frames art all round and thus also meets the technical requirements of the standards for ageing-resistant papers in accordance with DIN 6738 (LDK 24-85) and ISO 9706. It is not generally used for very old photographs due to the calcium carbonate.
Many design options.
The background cardboard enables various stagings of works of art. The application examples give a visual impression of the different effect of the picture compared to a borderless presentation without a gap between the picture and the frame profile.
W White
AW Antique white
NW Natural white
G Grey
S Black
Note! If the colour of the background cardboard and the picture don't exactly match, the cardboard is nearly always selected one shade darker rather than too light: Like this, particularly with white shades, the frame doesn't make the picture look yellowed.
