Framing and use

The HALBE Protect protects against harmful and changing climates by maintaining a constant relative humidity inside. Sensitive works of art are thus always and everywhere safe -  whether in museum exhibitions at changing locations, during transportation, in unair-conditioned rooms or in private collections. The airtight interior and the rear wall made of acid-free and age-resistant KLUG corrugated cardboard ensure optimum conservation conditions. This is free from damaging acids, solvents and plasticizers. This makes it resistant to ageing and safe for sensitive paperwork. Artglass AR 92 glass is recommended to protect the front. It protects against ageing caused by UV radiation. The Artglass AR 99 Protect glass offers additional protection against mechanical damage. Insertion from the front is simple, quick and precise. This is made possible by magnetic opening and closing according to the unique HALBE principle.

Appearance and dimensions

The frame, which has won the Red Dot Design Award, can be harmoniously matched to the object and ambience.

The PROTECT is available as a wooden frame and an aluminum frame, each in different colours from white to natural walnut - for perfect harmony with walls or furniture. For a contemporary look, an optional decorative frame from Werner-Murrer-Rahmen in Munich can be added. The HALBE Protect magnetic frame is available in 40 standard formats or made to measure from 210 x 297 mm to 1200 x 1400 mm. You can find all picture frame sizes in our overview.

Hanging and securing

The HALBE Protect is hermetically sealed using eccentric locks. These also prevent unauthorized opening. For quick and secure hanging of the picture frames in landscape or portrait format, the back is provided with special hanging holes for horizontal compensation with slanted nails. To protect the wall and ensure air circulation, four height-adjustable wall spacers with felt dots in the corners keep the distance. These are free from harmful plasticizers and leave no residue on the wall.  We recommend protecting the picture frame with the HALBE picture lock BS 4 to prevent unauthorized hanging.

Passive protection

The basic idea of the Protect magnetic frame is to stabilize the relative humidity in a small space around the exhibit. This goal is achieved with the help of a hermetically sealed picture frame with silica gel ProSorb as a buffer material. The silica gel efficiently absorbs or releases moisture, significantly reducing harmful fluctuations in humidity due to temperature fluctuations. The acid-free and age-resistant corrugated cardboard also has a high water storage capacity and a wavy structure for optimum air circulation. The PROTECT passively protects against changes in the relative humidity inside the frame, regardless of the humidity outside, thus ensuring a constant microclimate for the artwork. In this way, it is possible to display the exhibit both in rooms with inadequate air conditioning and to use it for loans without any problems and without damaging it.

The large fluctuations in relative humidity in the room (grey) are stabilized by passive buffer materials inside the frame (blue) in a range that is not critical for the paper.

For everyday museum use

The PROTECT can be used as a versatile removable frame that is suitable for both long-term and temporary exhibitions. Even with a limited stock of frames, the frames can be reused for numerous exhibitions by adjusting the passe-partout. The PROTECT visually matches all other frame types from HALBE
