Art treasures always in view
New: Protect magnetic frame with data logger preparation for climate monitoring
Churches, May 23, 2024 - The energy crisis is forcing museums and exhibition venues to rethink their use of electricity and gas. The German Museums Association has published a list of recommendations to help cultural institutions avoid running out of energy. If you want to protect art from irreversible damage, you need to know the sensitivity of the materials and colours. In addition to UV radiation, works of art cannot tolerate fluctuations in humidity. HALBE-Rahmen (www.HALBE-rahmen.de) is constantly working to optimize the quality of its custom-made magnetic frames. Renowned museums and galleries like to use Protect magnetic frame for their sensitive works in difficult climatic conditions, especially when they are on loan. The airtight frame is now available with the newly developed 7 mm micro honeycomb cardboard from KLUG-CONSERVATION and a data logger preparation.
Protection of works on paper
Valuable works of art require a constant room climate. Changing temperature conditions, accompanied by rising and falling humidity, promote irreversible damage. Hygroscopic materials in particular, which include old papers, parchments and papyrus materials, interact with their surroundings. This means that they can absorb humidity, but also release it again if the air is too dry. These fluctuations in humidity cause paper to swell or form dents or waves, for example. In the worst case, the paper becomes brittle and cracked, colours can also be damaged. Largely constant values are important for climate-sensitive exhibits - as HALBE-Rahmen knows.
Protect magnetic frame - Stabilizes relative humidity
A few years ago, HALBE-Rahmen developed the Protect magnetic frame together with renowned museums and restorers in order to be able to exhibit sensitive works in rooms with poor or no air conditioning. The aim is to stabilize the relative humidity in a small space around the picture. This is achieved by means of an airtight frame with an internal buffer material - Silicagel ProSorb - which can quickly absorb and release moisture.
The well thought-out design of the PROTECT magnetic frame consists of a
sheet metal bracket composite with an aluminum rear panel, in which an aluminum inner tray is inserted. The newly developed 7 mm micro honeycomb cardboard from KLUG-CONSERVATION lies loosely on the base of the inner tray. The acid-free and ageing-resistant cardboard provides additional water storage in addition to the buffer material. It also has extreme compressive strength with optimum flatness. The scope of delivery also includes a 1.5 mm thick KLUG background cardboard.
Simply insert the paper work from the front using passepartout if necessary. Then place the profile frame with glass pane on top. The frame pulls together securely in seconds thanks to the innovative magnetic frame principle. Invisible eccentric locks are incorporated on the back of the frame. With a ¼ turn, the glass pane is pressed evenly against the built-in seal and hermetically seals the frame.
New: Protect magnetic frame with data logger preparation
As the saying goes: trust is good, control is better. To keep an eye on the humidity in the Protect magnetic frame at all times, HALBE prepares the micro honeycomb box for the optional SHT 4X data logger.
The user-friendly device from Swiss manufacturer Sensirion is equipped with an LCD display and has a measuring accuracy of +/- 1.5 % RH. The flat data logger measures just 75 x 32 x 6 mm (L x W x H) and records data for several years, depending on the measurement interval. It also has a Bluetooth Low Energy module that enables data transmission to and from Bluetooth SMART-enabled devices, such as an IOS or Android smartphone, from a distance of several meters.
"Thanks to the flat design of the PROTECT magnetic frame, the data logger fits perfectly into the micro honeycomb cardboard box without the need for additional openings in the frame for the sensor," explains David Halbe, Managing Director of HALBE-Rahmen GmbH. "From our point of view, it is a perfect preventative addition for climate-sensitive paperwork.

About HALBE-Rahmen:
Since 1946, the unrestricted attention of the HALBE family has belonged to the perfect frames for lithographs, paintings and photographs. Over the decades, Hubert HALBE 's small workshop has developed into one of the world's leading quality manufacturers of picture frames. At the production site in Kirchen in Rhineland-Palatinate, every frame is manufactured to the highest quality standards and with the craftsmanship of the almost 60 employees. in 1973, HALBE-Rahmen GmbH(www.HALBE-rahmen.de) developed the magnetic frame principle, which forms the basis for all frames. It allows pictures to be easily and conveniently framed and exchanged from the front. The company, now in its third generation, supplies picture frames for museums, public institutions, industrial companies, photographers and private households.
