Alwin Lay in the spotlight: a solo presentation at Art Düsseldorf 2023
At Art Düsseldorf 2023, the Christine König Galerie dedicated a solo presentation to the artist Alwin Lay. The Romanian-born artist studied at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne as well as the Düsseldorf Art Academy. His extraordinary art has already been exhibited in numerous museums.
Alwin Lay is an artist who works with photography, video, installation and sculpture. He uses objects as projection surfaces for desires and expectations, often resulting in subtle but purposeful mistakes, planned modifications and surreal voids. Lay precisely choreographs everyday objects in spatial situations that develop unpredictably. This kind of staging triggers irritation and disappointment, but also an identification of the viewers with the objects depicted, which seem to embody human qualities. These moments include failure, tragedy and humour. At the same time, Lay exaggerates the representations of the photographic medium itself and shows the false promises and unshakable hopes that have accompanied photography since its inception.
