A rediscovered collection
From May to August, the Kunstmuseum Moritzburg Halle (Saale) will be showing around 80 Japanese woodblock prints that have recently been rediscovered in the museum's Graphic Arts Collection. All the important aspects and facets of Japanese woodblock prints - known in the West as ukiyo-e (images of the ephemeral world) - are among them: Scenes from the popular Kabuki theater, portraits of actors, heroic stories, beautiful ladies, landscapes, and depictions of plants and animals. Particularly for the modernist artists of around 1900, who were shown in parallel in the main exhibition "La Bohème. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and the Masters of Montmartre", Japanese woodcuts were an important source of inspiration. The exhibition is currently closed due to the pandemic, but can be experienced digitally in a film and virtual tour. Information about openings can be found on the museum's website.
Restoration requirements optimally met
Many of the sheets have been scientifically researched and restored for the first time for the presentation of the collection. About 15 works are presented in new HALBE Conservo magnetic frame the colour-coordinated narrow oak moulding ensures a harmonious overall appearance of the presentation, while the acid-free back panels guarantee the protection of the fragile works on paper. The picture frames are additionally equipped with Optium Museum Acrylic glass, which minimizes light reflections, static charge and UV light influence, thus ensuring the best possible conservation of the works.
The acquisition of a larger quantity of HALBE Conservo magnetic frame , which can now be used across the collection for photographs and graphics, was made possible by the special investment programme of the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media and the state of Saxony-Anhalt.
