What are the sizes of picture frames?

What are the advantages of a picture frame with passepartout?

A high-quality passepartout offers many advantages. It is so seen an additional frame for your picture and additionally enhances the overall impression. The matching passepartout to the picture can thus provide a reinforcing effect through its cut edge. But the use has another decisive advantage: a picture can be optimally fitted into an existing frame with the help of an individual passepartout. Learn more about passepartouts here. If you would like to find out more about who implements your custom-made passepartout, take a look at our tour of the passepartout station .

Which passepartout size, width or thickness?

Below is a listing of the various passepartout thicknesses and their maximum size and available color:

1.5 mm thickness, up to 1200 x 1400 mm: White, antique white, natural white, gray, black
1.5 mm thickness, up to 1400 x 2500 mm: White, antique white, natural white
2.6 mm thickness, up to 1680 x 2500 mm: Antique white
3.0 mm thickness, up to 1200 x 1400 mm: White, antique white, natural white, black

Which passepartout colors does HALBE offer?

At HALBE you get five different colors. The three shades of white (white, antique white, natural white) match almost all motifs. A solid-colored gray or black passepartout is used when a clearer demarcation between the motif and the back wall is required. Thus, your passepartout is colored entirely according to your ideas.

The pure white shade goes well with bright motifs and glossy photo papers. Old white is a very neutral and slightly muted shade of white that goes well with fine art papers. Natural white, with its slightly yellowish hue, goes well with older or darker papers.

With or without passepartout

If you want to frame your picture flat and without a passepartout, simply choose the same frame size (=glass size) as your picture size. If you want to frame your picture in a passepartout, the passepartout cut-out should be approx. 1 cm smaller than your picture to ensure that the picture is well covered by the passepartout cardboard . You can easily determine the appropriate picture frame size from the following table.

Passepartout dimensions FAQ

How wide should a passepartout be?

For harmonious framing, we recommend a passepartout width of approx. 10-12% of the longer side of the picture. For a picture of 20 x 30 cm, this would mean a border of 3-3.6 cm for the passepartout.

Whether a wider or narrower width is preferred is ultimately a matter of taste. In our knowledge section on passepartouts, you can see how different widths change the effect of a picture.

How do I calculate the passepartout cut-out?

The cut-out is the area through which the framed picture will later be visible. It should be approx. 1 cm smaller than the picture so that it covers it all the way around. For a 20 x 30 cm picture, the cut-out should therefore be 19 x 29 cm.

How do I calculate the correct picture frame size with passepartout?

The HALBE frame configurator automatically suggests a harmonious passepartout for the frame when you place your order. Alternatively, you can conveniently enter your desired dimensions as well.

The required frame size can also be easily calculated from the desired cut-out and the border width of the passepartout.

Add twice the desired border width of your passepartout to the cut-out. If, for example, a passepartout with a 19 x 29 cm cut-out is to be 3.5 cm wide all round, this results in an external dimension of 26 x 36 cm - this is the size your picture frame should have.

Tip: It is often a good idea to order an analogue standard format and adapt the passepartout size to it. This will save you the cost of a custom-made frame.
