Eye catcher with wow effect

Add a personal touch to the hallway with purposefully staged pictures.

Hang pictures in the hallway correctly: This is how it works effortlessly

Kirchen, October 10, 2023 - The hallway is the "business card" of the house - without question, it is primarily a functional zone where jackets, shoes & Co. often pile up. Also the lighting conditions often resemble a "dark room". Yet the hallway is the first room that visitors, friends and acquaintances enter. Whether small or large, narrow or angled - HALBE-Rahmen knows the special requirements of the entrance area and how to give it a homely touch with a wow effect using pictures. The most important rules for hanging pictures are surprisingly simple.

Create an inviting atmosphere with pictures

The hallway is the most used room in a house or apartment. Unfortunately, people often don't pay as much attention to it when decorating as they do to the living room or kitchen - yet the first impression is so important. Most hallways are narrow and have little natural light. It cannot be cluttered with lots of furniture and decorative items. Here, it is important to have a stylish wall design so that the "passageway area" looks homely. Whether elegant works of art, impressive photographs or pictures of the family: they add colour to the mostly neutrally painted walls and welcome guests in a personal way.

Stylish wall design - the small details make all the difference

Furnishing a hallway stylishly and invitingly at the same time is a big challenge for many people. Yet it is quite easy to make it shine with pictures.  In general, the selected photos, sketches or watercolors should harmonize with each other thematically and in terms of color. In addition, the framing must emphasize the radiance of the images and proportionally match the room. Which motifs are suitable for the hallway and the staircase adjacent to it, if any, depends on the taste in art and furnishings.

Don't spill the beans, make a splash

No matter how large a hallway is - the selected pictures should not be too small in size. Above a sideboard or shoe cabinet, a large-format framed picture - also called a "soloist" - will impress visitors more than many small ones. The width of the artwork should be no more than 2/3 or 3/4 of the width of the cabinet. The picture does not necessarily have to be hung in the center, a left- or right-aligned arrangement often looks more exciting and offers space to arrange, for example, a bouquet of flowers or a table lamp next to the picture. The distance between the bottom edge of the picture and the surface of the cabinet should be about 20 cm - unless you deliberately lean the picture against the wall.

Adding a finishing touch to niches with pictures

Often hallways are winding and have niches and wall projections. A bright, narrow niche is suitable for staging a portrait-sized picture in XXL format, for example, as a real eye-catcher. "The picture should be 20 cm away from all sides," recommends David Halbe, Managing Director of HALBE-Rahmen GmbH. "The surrounding wall colour acts like a mount and visually lifts the picture for the viewer."

But also a small picture series can be perfectly staged in a niche within the framework of a row or grid hanging. A Petersburg hanging is not advisable in the often small rooms, as it looks too restless. The situation is different in a large hallway. The chaotic arrangement of the many pictures of different sizes creates a picture wall, which gives a minimalist furnished room a personal character. If, in addition, the wall surface is painted in color, the pictures come into even greater effect.

"In every corner of the hallway, make sure there is enough light, otherwise the most beautiful picture will not come into its own," emphasizes David Halbe. If there is not enough daylight, purposefully placed ceiling and picture lamps provide a remedy.

Changing picture gallery without drilling

Anyone who likes to redecorate and wants to remain flexible in wall design should work with interchangeable frames, such as the HALBE magnetic frame. It makes it child's play to change pictures from the front - without turning them over. Picture strips are not advisable in the hallway area, because you need freedom of movement to put on and take off. Too quickly, an unfortunate movement could cause a picture to fall.

To avoid having to constantly drill new holes, gallery rails are recommended. One mounts the rail over the entire wall width with a few centimeters distance to the ceiling. The pictures are hung in place with picture hooks on the perlon or stainless steel cables - optionally with a safety device to prevent them from falling down. The hanging height depends on the format of the pictures and the arrangement. According to museum rules, pictures hang at eye level when their center is at 155 cm.

Pictures in the staircase: great effect with little effort

The staircase should not be underestimated as a picture gallery. Not many pictures need to hang - less is often more. With a single picture at the front of a staircase, you can completely change the atmosphere. The best choice is a large-format picture that gives the room colour and does not look lost on the wall. It should be placed in the centre of the wall at eye level so that it can really unfold its effect. "When hanging a series of pictures along the stairs, the gradient must be taken into account. This means that the pictures hang parallel to the staircase slope and that the centre of the picture, no matter how large the pictures are, is also always at 1.55 m.

A "soloist" can skilfully enhance the hallway.

Two black HALBE CLASSIC frames create a contrast to the white sideboard.

The pictures do not necessarily have to be hung centrally above a sideboard, an arrangement flush with the left or right often looks more exciting and offers space, for example, to arrange a bouquet of flowers next to it.

With a picture deliberately leaning against the wall, you can, for example, give the sideboard in the hallway a personal touch.

Image series are ideal for niches.

A small series of pictures can be perfectly staged in a niche as part of a row or grid hanging.

Large-format pictures come into their own in the stairwell
