Put pictures in XXL format in the spotlight with a HALBE magnetic frame

Kirchen, June 20, 2023 - "Big is beautiful" - this is especially true for large-format pictures. Every artist tries to capture a special moment in his picture - in XXL format these moments come alive. From a format of 70 x 100 cm, pictures are considered large - but it goes even bigger. Works of art in XXL format have a spectacular effect and captivate the viewer in a very special way. In order for a large-format picture to unfold its full radiance, it requires not only optimal placement, but also stylish framing. Whether wooden or aluminum profile, with or without window mat - that depends primarily on the picture. However, there are still many small details to consider, because a picture in XXL format can quickly weigh over 30 kg. HALBE-Rahmen (www.halbe-rahmen.de/en) manufactures individual magnetic frames up to the size of 200 x 300 cm, which allow framing from the front, meet conservation requirements and have a stable internal construction.

XXL pictures are a revolution in modern interior design

The visual language is full of emotion and passion - in XXL format, small details become visible, giving a picture a "wow effect". Renowned artists, such as the photo artist couple Daniel & Geo Fuchs, know about the fascination of large format pictures. They have a surprising and unique effect at the same time. Works of art in XXL format require a carefully selected space.

To set a large-format picture stylishly in scene, it requires know-how and sure instinct. Picture message, framing, hanging, light and ambience must fit together so that the motif can unfold its "overwhelming" effect on the viewer. They are suitable, for example, as a decorative accent in loft apartments and interiors with high ceilings. They also add a special flair to large staircases.

Multi-part pictures "en vogue"

When thinking of pictures in XXL format, everyone immediately thinks of a so-called "soloist" - but there are also multi-part pictures, i.e. a large picture is divided into several segments. They give a whole new picture impression and create a modern and exciting effect in the room. Not every motif is suitable for a two-, three- or four-part staging. No image content should be lost in the division. Three-part pictures - also called "triptych" - are the classic among the multi-partitions. To give a picture more depth or attention, it is also recommended to divide a picture into four squares or rectangles. Due to the symmetry of the segments, the overall picture always remains harmonious.

Framing is a stylistic element that connects the individual parts. Multi-part pictures are often framed with filigree profiles without a window mat. When hanging, make sure that the distances between the individual images are absolutely equal and do not exceed 5 - 10 cm. The photo artist couple Daniel & Geo Fuchs even do without a distance between the multi-part images in their picture "Luis" from the series "Nature & Destruction" to achieve a one-piece look. When staging a three-piece, for example, start with the middle motif first and arrange the others around it.

Framing with wooden or aluminum profile

The frame is an essential part of the artistic expression and affects the value of the picture. It must emphasize the uniqueness of the picture. Wooden frames are the classic. For centuries, wood has been the preferred material for stylish framing. Due to the different types of wood and glazing, it offers a wide range of natural shades. In addition, wooden frames are very robust and exude high value. Old baroque frames with intricate carvings fill us with awe. But their warm charm wooden frames radiate even without additional decoration. The grain makes each wooden frame unique. They are suitable for the presentation of any work of art.

An aluminum frame, on the other hand, is a "plain" all-rounder, as the metal look is always neutral. Whether museum, gallery, office or home living room - an aluminum frame impresses with its filigree design. It fits perfectly with the minimalist style of furnishing. Aluminum frames are available in various colors and surface textures from matte to glossy. They give pictures a modern yet timeless appearance.

"The profile selection is primarily a matter of taste. However, it would be a break with style to frame an "old master" in aluminum," emphasizes David Halbe, Managing Director of HALBE-Rahmen GmbH. For framing XXL pictures, HALBE offers magnetic frames with wooden strips up to the format of 140 x 250 cm. Sustainable Aluleisten can be ordered due to higher stability up to 200 x 300 cm - nevertheless a slim profile optics possible. You can choose between angular and rounded profile sizes and 18 different colors. Each magnetic frame has a stable internal construction, because a picture in XXL format can quickly weigh 10 kg and more.

Window mat - a classic stylistic device

Framing with a window mat enhances a picture - this also applies to artworks in XXL format. Care should be taken to use only museum-quality certified mount board that is acid-free and resistant to aging. As for the choice of window mat color, plain whites are timeless and always look classy. However, gray or black window mats can also perfectly set off a picture. Red, green or even other colored mounts are no longer in trend.

The window mat width depends on the size of the picture and the desired effect. Works of art up to a format of 100 x 140 cm or extremely landscape-format panoramic pictures are often framed with a window mat that corresponds to at least 10 percent of the longest side of the picture, so that they appear even more impressive. For pictures almost 200 cm high, art lovers often opt for a 2 cm wide window mat. Its purpose is to prevent the artwork from sticking to the glass.

Whether white, gray or black - HALBE-Rahmen offers individually cut mounts up to the format of 120 x 140 cm - old white mounts are even possible up to 168 x 250 cm.

XXL pictures are "heavyweights" with format

The larger a picture, the more important it is to pay attention to the stability and load-bearing capacity of a frame. Plastic frames are considered to be true "flyweights", but they sag quickly with larger formats and do not offer the picture sufficient protection. Whether wooden or aluminum frames - all magnetic frames from HALBE consist of a basic element, glass and profile. The basic element is a dimensionally stable composite of galvanized steel sheet angular frame and ph-neutral hard foam board or Klug corrugated board (both PAT-tested).

This composite serves as a back panel and support surface for picture, window mat and glass. The frame profile adheres precisely to the base element by means of special magnetic strips.

The choice of glass also has an influence on the weight. From 120 x 140 cm format, HALBE-Rahmen recommends using Plexiglas exclusively. It is considerably lighter, break-proof and protects sensitive exhibits from ultraviolet radiation. In addition, it has no inherent coloration and therefore does not distort the colors of the artwork.

XXL pictures have special requirements for hanging

Whether above a piece of furniture or as a solitaire on a large wall - in principle, when hanging pictures in XXL format, attention must be paid to the wall condition. It should be a solid wall - not a plasterboard wall. Picture rails and ropes are also not recommended, as they can give way or tear over time, despite a certain load-bearing capacity. From a format of 120 x 140 cm, mounting with special heavy-duty hooks with several screws per angle is advisable. In order to avoid a possible falling of the picture, a picture safety device should be mounted at the lower edge of the object.

From a format of 70 x 100 cm pictures are considered large - but it goes even larger. Works of art in XXL format have a spectacular effect and captivate the viewer in a very special way.
